Independence Bowl History
The MainStay Independence Bowl will return to the New Year's Eve spot after being played on December 27 the past two years. Prior to the 2001 game, the Independence Bowl was held on the 31st four of the previous five years, and a total of six times during the game's 27-year history. The last New Year's Eve game was the classic "Snow Bowl" in which Mississippi State defeated Texas A&M in overtime 43-41, playing the entire game in a blanket of snow. That same year, the Independence Bowl was the first football game of the new millenium, as it ended just after midnight in the eastern time zone. The 2003 MainStay Independence Bowl will mark the 13th year the Shreveport, Louisiana-based game has appeared on ESPN. Since the 1991 game, the first to be televised by ESPN when SEC powerhouse Georgia defeated soon-to-be SEC foe Arkansas, 24-15, the Independence Bowl's overall payout has nearly doubled to its present $2.4 million annual payout to higher education.
