BOBBY BOYD (DB-HB, Colts 1960-68; AC, Colts 1969-72, 1981) is the semi retired owner of an awards and trophy business in greater Dallas, Texas, where he enjoys spending time with his three children and six grandchildren. An All American defensive back from the University of Oklahoma, Boyd recorded seven interceptions as a Colts rookie in 1960. His seven interceptions in 1965 was a league best, and, to this day, Boyd is the Colts' all-time career interceptions leader with 57 picks. Boyd was a veteran of 121 NFL games and he is glad he played in the era that he did. "I believe that every rule change the NFL's made has been designed to help the offense score more points," Boyd said. `When I played, we could beat on the guy all the way down field." It was that style of play that provided the catalyst for one of Boyd's favorite coaching memories. "When the Jets beat us in Super Bowl III, they dinked and dunked the ball downfield, just hitting the seams," Boyd said. "I became a (Colts) assistant coach the next year and (Don) Shula called me into his office and told me to find a way to defense it. We came up with a double zone. I was leery of it, but it worked. Nowadays, it's called `Cover two' and it's what NFL defenses use about 50 percent of the time." Boyd played and coached for the Colts in Baltimore and therefore does not identify with the franchise that moved to Indianapolis. Nevertheless, he enjoys watching Colts quarterback Peyton Manning. "He's got the quick feet, a good football mind and he works hard, but Johnny Unitas is still the best there ever was," Boyd said. "John was probably the toughest guy I knew mentally. He could take a tremendous beating and never say a word. John would hold the ball longer than Manning does. He would give the receivers a little more time to get open."Colts Tickets
