BRUCE HARPER (RB-WR, Jets 1977-84) heads the non-profit organization "Heroes and Cool Kids:" a mentoring program being implemented in the New Jersey public-school system, "It's been very rewarding to be a part of this organization;' Harper said. "It's enjoyable to see the kids that we mentored in fifth and sixth grade go on to the high schools and become mentors themselves." Harper is himself a product of the New Jersey school system-he attended high school in Englewood with John Travolta and said, tongue in cheek, "I actually taught him to dance." Harper was known for his own moves on the gridiron when he played as a 5-foot-8, 170 pound runner and receiver. He played in 99 games and was named team MVP in three of his eight seasons with the Jets. "I miss the passion of playing:' said Harper.”I think everybody needs a sense of purpose in life, a sense of importance. Playing football did that for me. Football was the thing I did that flowed. It came out naturally and made me feel alive. That's the ultimate in life, playing pro football."
PATRICK LEAHY (K, Jets 1974-91) is the founder and co-owner of The Hair Saloon for Men, "a new-era version of the barber shop," ', Leahy said. The father of three lives with his wife in St. Louis, Mo. Leahy is the Jets all-time scoring leader with 1,470 points but he hardly envisioned even making an NFL roster when, on a lark, the college soccer player attended a 1974 tryout. "I had never done it and had no idea what I was getting into," he said. "I had a strong leg and figured I could always tell my grandkids I had a tryout." Leahy made the team and was named the Jets' MVP after the 1990 season. Afterwards, he found a surprise on the stool in front of his locker. "It was a telegram from Joe [Namath] that congratulated me and said how proud he was of me," Leahy said. "I still have it framed. Joe was one of the nicest guys I've ever met."
