BILLY SIMS (RB, Lions 1980-84) was the first player selected in the 1980 draft overall. Sims rushed for 5,106 yards on 1,131 attempts and 42 touchdowns before a major knee injury prematurely ended his promising career. A three-time Pro Bowl selection, Sims recently visited the Pro Football Hall of Fame for the induction of Lions great Barry Sanders. "1 was good;' Sims said, "But he was, and is, something special." In July, Sims, who won the 1978 Heisman Trophy while at the University of Oklahoma, opened a barbecue restaurant in Tulsa, Okla. In addition, Sims satisfies his passion for helping others through his work with America Can!, a national network of public charter schools that provides at-risk youths the opportunity to earn a high school diploma. "We deal with kids that the public school has given up on;' Sims said.”Either they're going to be a statistic or a productive citizen. We want them to be productive citizens."
KEN CALLICUTT (RB, Lions 1978-82) came to the Lions in 1977 as a free agent out of Clemson. "You know your work is cut out for you when you're undrafted;' Callicutt said. "I remember thinking I had to make an impression and make it fast. Then, in my first scrimmage, I broke a 68-yard run and knew I'd done my job of betting noticed." The highlight of Callicutt's pro career came in a 1981 game at the Pontiac Silverdome against the defending NFL champion Oakland Raiders. "I stripped the ball away from Oakland's return man on the opening kickoff," he said. "We recovered and Billy Sims scored from the two-yard line on the next play. Then the rout was on." Callicutt finished his career with 742 kickoff return yards and a 16.9-yard return average. He called Hall of Famer Jack Youngblood the toughest player he faced in his career. "He was intimidating physically;' Callicutt said, "but he'd also have blood running down his nose after the first quarter in most games."
