Baltimore Ravens History

There's a respectful fiction that the Baltimore Ravens football team entered the NFL as a new franchise in 1996. In fact, the Cleveland Browns moved to Baltimore and became well known as the Ravens. Though, the league and the Cleveland entered into an agreement that Baltimore Ravens team name and records would stay in the city for eventual use by another NFL franchise. So the "new" football team had to find a new name. NFL properties came up with a list of over 100 possible nicknames. That was finally narrowed down to three and the Baltimore Sun performed a poll of fans to select one. Out of 33,288 who phoned in, 21,108 voted for Ravens.

On March 29, 1996, Baltimore’s NFL team was called the Ravens. The nickname was chosen from among three finalists in a poll carry out by the Baltimore Sun. Baltimore Ravens fans selected the name in honor of Edgar Allan Poe, the American poet whose writing implement his famous poem, “The Raven” while living in Baltimore.
