LOUIS LIPPS (WR. Steelers and Saints 198492) works as a mortgage broker for Steel City Mortgage Services in Pittsburgh, Pa. He has fond memories of his indoctrination into the NFL. "The thing that amazed me so much was the attitude and reception I received from the veterans in my rookie year;" Lipps said. "Guys like Donnie Shell, Mike Webster, Jack Lambert, and Calvin Sweeney. Greg Hawthorne and especially John Stallworth, who was almost, like a father figure to me. He took me under his wing and led me in the right direction. That had a great effect on my career. Some of the guys helping me learn the system were competing with me for the same job. Those guys were fantastic." The Steelers' No. 1 draft pick in 1984, Lipps had his best season in 1985 when he caught 59 passes for 1,134 yards and 12 touchdowns. "I'm fortunate to have left football healthy," he said. "I feel lucky when I hear about all the hip and knee replacements others are getting:' Though Lipps has been out of pro football for little more than a decade, he sees big differences in today's game. "When I played, the Steelers were going to run the ball until the other team stopped us' said Lipps. "I'd love to he playing today because for receivers. 100 catches a year is like nothing. When I was playing, we were happy if we caught 60 or 70 passes.”
MIKE WAGNER (DB, Steelers 1971-80) lives and works in Pittsburgh, Pa., selling institutional asset-management services. "A lot of my generation of players stayed here because we had long careers and the community is very good to us;' Wagner said.”We're treated like treasures. When we're around football fans, particularly some of the older ones, they really light up. We left a lot of good memories." Wagner was one of the main cogs in the defensive backfield during the Steelers' championship run of the 1970s. "I miss playing on game day," Wagner said. "I miss the challenge of it. One of the neat things about sports is that it lets you know very quickly whether or not you're doing the right thing. You get instant feedback." Wagner recorded 36 interceptions during his 10 seasons in Pittsburgh. In 1973, he led the league with eight picks. Despite numerous personal and team highlights, Wagner are enduring memory of his playing days is the support of the Steelers faithful. "I can remember being in the playoffs in early winter and there'd be snow and icy rain coming down," Wagner said. "We'd be on the field and I'd look up in the stands and see all these crazy people sitting in rain gear or garbage bags having a ball. It was motivational."
